KISSed-off rocker says "That's my sugar!"
Ex-KISS drummer files lawsuit against rival band over lyrical
content.
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - Peter Criss, longtime drummer for the
legendary macabre rock group KISS, has filed a lawsuit against fellow
legendary rockers Def Leppard over use of the word 'sugar'.
Criss feels that money has been long-owed to him since 1987, when Def
Leppard achieved worldwide success with their smash pop-metal
signature song, 'Pour Some Sugar On Me'.
"The world knows I did a popular song back in '78 called 'That's The
Kind Of Sugar Poppa Likes' says Criss. "No one else was using the
word 'sugar' in that context before me, man. Not even The Archies.
Then Def Leppard comes along and steals my idea and makes millions of
dollars. It's not right, man. I just want justice. Those leppards
messed with the wrong cat."
Members of the accused Def Leppard have yet to comment publicly on
the lawsuit, although it is widely known in the rock community that
Criss and Def Leppard drummer Ric Allen have had an altercation in
the past.
"That has nothing to do with this lawsuit", says Criss. "He came
backstage at one of KISS' concerts a couple of years ago and started
a shoving match with me. Why, I don't know. You'll have to ask him,
man."
Criss continues "This whole thing has been very upsetting. I've got a
lot of things going on right now, man. I'm working on new music and
am close to finishing up a book about my life. I guess I need to add
another chapter now."
Superior Court Judge Rupert Pupkin will preside over the case, which
is expected to begin at the Santa Monica Courthouse by early May.
Exactly how much Criss is suing for is undisclosed.
What the fuck is wrong with some people? Peter Criss has got to be on the sauce again. Why in the hell would this guy sue Leppard over one word? I guess Pete's rent is due for this month. What a totally lame-assed lawsuit. You know what? The word "The" is the most common word in the English language. Guess what? I just copyrighted it. Now anyone that says the word "The" in any form owes me a quarter. How fucked up does that sound? I can't stand how some ex-rock stars try and capitolize on other people's fame. Look, it's as simple as this...if you feel like someone wronged you, go out and make a better song...if you can. I'm sorry to say, but Peter Criss solo can never ever match the success that Leppard has and had. But I dare him to try. He doesn't have the chops to write material even remotely successful. Shit, Ace Frehley had a better run after Kiss than Peter Criss did. Mainly because Frehley has some song writing talent. I remember the song Criss is talking about. It's on his solo album. That album is the biggest piece of shit conceived by any member of Kiss before or after. Hell, I'd rather listen to Gene's version of "When You Wish Upon a Star" a thousand times straight than all of Criss' '78 solo disc. Simply awful in every respect of the word. But this sorry lawsuit will continue through the system, but I can guarantee Criss won't see a dime and might end up paying Leppard for damages. Wouldn't that be ironic?
And him saying his song was popular? Since when? Fuck, no mainstream radio station has played that song since probably '78, but I'm being generous because I'll bet "New York Groove" got far more airplay than any song from any Kiss solo album. Maybe he meant it was popular among his group of drinking buddies? Who knows, but he's delusional if he thinks any song from his album is popular. Give me a break Pete. Do yourself a big favor and drop this stupid lawsuit before you piss a lot more people off.
