As I sit here and reflect on over 2 1/2 years of this band, I've come to realize that there are a few things that have remained constants. We always get to a club at 7. Seena will always dance to Little Suzi. And Michael J Cox will always be on my left. It's hard when one of those constants goes away. But most importantly, it's hard when your friend has things that are going wrong in his life and you are helpless to do anything about them. But I won't go any further than that on that subject. This is a time of reflection, so that's what I plan on doing.
We've been playing out for 2 1/2 years, but some people don't know that we were together close to a year before that. We had just gotten rid of a guitarist that when we told him the band's concept, decided that it wasn't going to work and that basically, we would come out looking like fools in the end (Hindsight 20/20 yet Max?). Jimi told me about a guy he knew that was coming out of another project that might be interested in coming in. When MJC showed up and played, he seemed to be judging us more than we were judging him. When he unloaded a lot of stuff on us about professionalism and other business related things, my first thought was "This guy's an asshole!" Hindsight has shown me, though, that all MJ was doing was telling us the way things had to be for this to succeed. Because, at least to my knowledge, we showed him it could. I'll admit that at first, I wasn't real close to MJ, but time made us closer as people and musicians. Over the course of 2 1/2 years, we've accomplished a lot of things. Two of the highlights being opening for the Beggars for the, now, 4th time and for Bret in Pottsville this past May. But the highlight for me was working with such an easygoing person (Most of the time) as MJ. I know that he's told me more than once during this band's existence that I am the nucleus of this band, but it's the sum of all parts that makes a band what it is. MJC was the powderkeg of this band. Like I said before...there are always constants. And the one thing I could always count on was looking to my left and seeing a blur of blonde hair. My left will never be the same again. I miss the guy already. As a band, we'll forge ahead like we always do, but for me, my heart will always hold a place for MJC.
