I just got done watching the USA beat Greece in basketball and something came to mind that I had to get off my chest.
Why does it seem like Greek fans are some of the rudest fans on the planet? Sure, I know the Olympics are in Greece and the Greeks were playing the US, but what I heard was rediculous. The Greeks would boo the US on every posession of the ball. Why in the fuck would fans need to do this? It isn't like these guys are playing for territorial rights or for the lives of millions of people. It's a friendly exhibition for Christ's sake. Tournament play. Not a war. I know if I spent hundreds and hundreds of US dollars to go to Greece for a week and see the games, I would go for what it is. An exhibition of the world's best atheletes. Hell, I wouldn't even go specifically to see the US, but to see the WORLD play. That's why I watch the games in the first place. Do you really think I or anyone else in this country would be watching ping pong at all unless it was an Olympic event? I doubt it, but I do. Because those people that compete turn a children's game into a legit competitive sport. THAT'S what's impressive to me. If they had Olympic Candy Land, I'd watch it. It just shows you the level of competition that resides in this world, which is why booing and jeering at other teams is bullshit in my book. Fuck, I wouldn't even boo the Iraqi team if I seen them play something that the US was involved in. Those people can't be blamed for the stupidity of some of their countrymen. Look at them for what they are...superior atheletes.
I think that Greece has a lot to learn about being a gracious host of a tournament the calibre of the Olympics. Yeah, it all started in Greece, but in my mind, the modern games should never ever go back to Greece again.
