I love when bands reunite all original members. However, I hate when one feels he can make it on his own. Here's the scenario:
Warrant has recently announced that all the original members are back in the fold, save one. Probably the biggest piece in the puzzle...Jani Lane. Yeah, Jani has decided to go the way of Bret Michaels and start a solo career of his own. He's been replaced by former Black N' Blue frontman Jamie St. James.
Now my thoughts....it completely sucks. There are bands all over the place that are distinguishable by their singers. Warrant is one of them. I doubt someone will hear Jerry Dixon and say "That's Warrant." But if they hear Jani, they know. So what does that say for St. James? Simple. He's filling some shoes that obviously can't be filled. I catagorize this move in a similar fashion I criticize Van Halen for firing Hagar and getting Gary Cherrone. Imagine going to your favorite restaurant and asking for a piece of apple pie and they bring you peach. Sure, you like peach, but it isn't the same as apple. Same applies here. I think St. James is a good singer....in Black N' Blue. Not in Warrant. If you check out Metal Sludge's website (www.metal-sludge.com), you'll see a show review with the new/old lineup. They said Warrant sucked because Jamie couldn't pull off Jani's songs. He was weak and cracked constantly. If I were strictly a Warrant fan at that show, I'd be asking for my money back. Or at least the chance to kick the rest of the boys in the balls for agreeing on this move. If Jamie wants to be a rock star again, why doesn't he reform Black N' Blue? I know Tommy Thayer is currently "Ace" in a Kiss tribute band (Oh wait...no. It IS Kiss. My bad.), but there are millions of guitarists out there. Find another one. It can't be that hard in LA. I heard you have to play guitar in order to graduate high school out there (Ok that's an exaggeration, but you get the idea). But don't bring down what people expect from Warrant. Why couldn't the rest of the band look into someone fresh? Someone a little green, but hungry to live up to the legacy Jani made with the band? I would much rather do that for two reasons:
1.) If the new guy was a no-name, it makes postings like this pretty much null and void because I don't know the guy any better than anyone else. No one will be drawing parallels.
2.) It won't drag down the band and the new guy's past accomplishments because he isn't a good fit in the band.
As for Jani, I think he's absolutely insane for leaving Warrant. Does he honestly believe he can make it as a solo artist? Has he ever tried in the past and succeeded? Nope. Never. Just as Warrant is distinguishable by Jani, Jani is distinguishable by Warrant. He won't make it as a solo artist because of that. He'll get the typical Warrant fanbase album sales, but as a whole, no one will care about a Jani Lane CD. Unless he puts a band together with an all-star lineup of other past 80's hair stars and can get those people's fans to buy the CD, but I doubt that will happen. He wants to see just how far he can drop before he returns to what made him a star, I guess.
Basically, I think both parties made a shitty move for their careers. This might end up hurting more things than helping. I heard the parting was amicable, but that doesn't make it any better. Jani...go back to Warrant. Make another "Cherry Pie" with the rest of the guys and forget this solo shit. It's not going to take off. Not me being pessimistic. It's me being REAListic. Warrant...kick St. James to the curb. take a break. Write some killer songs. Then when Jani comes running back after the solo effort fails, start making another killer album and start promoting it. If that doesn't happen, I can't see Warrant lasting more than another year.
